Life Of Lord Mahavir

Ep-10: Keval Gyan

After twelve and a half years had passed since the Lord began his sadhna, he had managed to rid himself of most of the karmas from his soul.He arrived in a village called “Jrumbhak” on Vaishakh Sud 10 (the 10th day of the bright half of the 7th lunar month). Again, on this day, at that time, the moon united with the Uttarphalguni nakshatra. The Lord sat beneath a saal tree in the farm of a farmer named "Shyamak" on the bank of a river called "Rujuvalika" in what is now the Hazaribaug district of Jharkhand State.

He had reached the pinnacle of his meditation. The soul is the storehouse and source of unlimited knowledge, but such knowledge is obscured by karmas, and until those karmas are removed, the individual remains ignorant. When these karmas are removed from the soul, pure, profound, and complete knowledge comes to light, known in Jain terminology as “Keval gyan,” meaning “omniscience.”The Lord was enlightened with such knowledge, resulting in a magnificent and glorious aura around him, which attracted celestial beings including Indra, as well as people. With the help of Keval gyan, the Lord could see the "supreme truth" and began explaining it to the people who came to listen. He delivered sermons daily.

The life of the Lord was full of unusual events. One such incident occurred after he attained Keval gyan. The first eleven individuals who received and accepted his first sermon were not merchants or kshatriyas but Brahmins. All eleven of them came to debate with the Lord, yet they also had unanswered questions in their minds about life that they had been unable to solve until then. Surprising them, the Lord acknowledged their unspoken questions and proceeded to answer them to their satisfaction. Convinced and impressed, all eleven accepted the Lord's discipleship. These questions and answers are recorded in Jain scriptures, which are available even today. These first disciples of any Tirthankar are categorized as “Gandhar” in Jain terminology, with Shree Gautam Swamy and Shree Sudharma Swamy were prominent among them.
